How do you Get to the Moraine Lake Rockpile Trailhead?

Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are hot spots in Banff National Park! This popularity has led to Moraine Lake Road being closed to personal vehicles since 2023, so the only way to access the lake is via shuttle. We recommend the Moraine Lake Bus Company due to having the most convenient pick-up areas, and most departures, and you’re guaranteed not to wait in line—all of which help to keep your day stress-free and unforgettable!

Booking Your Shuttle

  1. Reservations: Simply book your shuttle tickets online before your trip. There are tons of departure times every day, from 4:00 am to late into the afternoon. Choose what works best for you, but remember that tickets sell out quickly. Be sure to book early to secure your preferred time!
  2. Pick-Up Point: Make sure you check where you will be getting picked up. Head to your pick-up spot at either the Lake Louise Summer Gondola or Samson Mall in the heart of the Lake Louise townsite. See our FAQs for which pick-up spot is right for you.
  3. Ticket Options: When choosing your ticket(s), you can select a trip direct to Moraine Lake or Lake Louise, or a combo ticket that includes visits to both of these beautiful lakes. Once you’ve chosen your outbound trip, select a return time that will give you enough time at the lake (most visitors spend 1.5 hours at Moraine Lake). If you plan to do a longer hike like Larch Valley, Sentinel Pass, or Consolation Lakes, then give yourself more time and plan your return time accordingly.

  1. Trailhead: Find the trailhead near the Moraine Lake parking area. Look to the left side of the parking lot, just past the washrooms toward the lake. The trail begins at the break in the fence line. Signs are also there to guide you, and your friendly driver will point you in the right direction. The Rockpile Trailhead sign
  2. Cross the Bridge: The trail descends slightly toward Moraine Creek. Follow the well-marked trail and you’ll arrive at a sign for Consolation Lakes and a bridge over the creek.
  3. Climb Up: The trail has been well-built by Parks Canada and steps have been carved out of the rockpile. The trail meanders up the backside of the rockpile with great views up toward Mount Babel and the Tower of Babel. At a fork in the trail halfway up the pile, turn right and continue up the steps. 4. Rockpile Summit: You made it and reached the top of the rockpile (or ‘Moraine’) that gives the lake its name. The trail branches out at this point to numerous viewpoints, some of which face the crystal-blue waters of Moraine Lake while others face back down the valley to Lake Louise.
