Getting to the Trailhead

Over the last decade, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake have become bustling tourist destinations in Banff National Park. This surge in popularity has led to restricted or non-existing parking options at both lakes. However, there are plenty of shuttle options available. The easiest and most straightforward option for you is the Moraine Lake Bus Company.

Arranging Your Shuttle

  1. Reservations: Simply book your shuttle tickets through the Moraine Lake Bus Company, which has 20+ daily departures to Lake Louise. Tickets often sell out well in advance, so book early to secure your preferred time!
  2. Pick-Up Point: Make sure you check where you will be getting picked up from. If coming from outside of town, drive to the Lake Louise Summer Gondola parking lot, which is right off the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1). Parking is guaranteed (and included in your ticket)
  3. Ticket Options: When selecting your ticket, you can select either a:
    • Direct trip to Lake Louise
    • Combo ticket that includes 1 hour at Lake Louise, and as long as you want at Moraine Lake.

Once you’ve selected your outbound trip, you’ll be prompted to select a return time. Make sure to select a return time that gives you long enough to complete your hike. If you plan to do a longer hike, such as the Big Beehive, Plain of Six Glaciers, or the Teahouse Loop, then give yourself more time.

The Ride

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your shuttle ride to Lake Louise. This will allow you time to check-in, visit the bathroom, etc. before boarding your shuttle. Your ride up to Lake Louise takes 25 minutes.

Hike Summary

  1. Starting at the Lake Louise Lakeshore, follow the right shoreline to the Lake Agnes Trail sign and wooden staircase. Take the stairs up and begin the gradual climb up to Mirror Lake and onward to the Devil’s Thumb.
  2. Mirror Lake: After 2.6 kilometers (1.6 miles) and a few switchbacks you’ll reach Mirror Lake. This small lake sheltered by the Big Beehive offers a quiet escape from the bustling Lake Louise Lakeshore. After taking a break here, continue to the left toward the Lake Agnes Tea House.
  3. Lake Agnes Tea House: Continue underneath the Big Beehive and make your way to a wooden staircase, which parallels a small waterfall. Follow the staircase to the top and you will arrive at Lake Agnes Tea House. This historic spot is perfect for a rest and a snack.
  4. The Climb to Big Beehive: From Lake Agnes, continue on the lakeshore trail to the right of Lake Agnes. This will lead toward a series of switchbacks and the Big Beehive. Once you’ve made it to the top of this section, take a look back at the stunning views of Lake Agnes. Now, take a right at Big Beehive Junction, leading away from the Big Beehive.
  5. Lake Louise and Victoria Glacier: The trail to the Devil’s Thumb takes you along a narrow trail parallel to Lake Louise. Take your time and soak in the incredible views of the lake and Victoria Glacier. At the end of this section is where the hike becomes more challenging. Be prepared for steep sections and some loose rock.
  6. Final Ascent: The last stretch to the summit involves some scrambling. Use caution and take your time. The trail becomes less defined at points, so pausing to make good route-finding decisions will make your ascent much easier.
  7. Summit: At the top of the Devil’s Thumb, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of Victoria Glacier, Mount Victoria, Mount Lefroy, the Bow Valley, and all the shimmering lakes far below. Take pictures, sit back and unwind in the stunning beauty of the alpine landscape.
